Victorian era 18K gold Egyptomania cornelian watch key pendant
A beautiful example of Victorian Egyptomania, this large 18K yellow gold watch key pendant features a bold, oval-shaped reddish cornelian at its center. On either side of the stone are finely detailed depictions of the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis with her wings.
In Egyptian mythology, Isis is the goddess of magic, motherhood, and protection. Her wings represent her power to shield and nurture, inspired by the legend in which she used her wings to revive and protect her husband Osiris, and to shelter their son Horus. The wings became a symbol of divine protection and care, often shown embracing or guarding those under her watch.
During the Victorian era, fascination with Egyptian motifs—sparked by archaeological discoveries and the allure of exotic antiquity—led to “Egyptomania” jewelry, where symbols like Isis’s wings were adopted for their beauty and layered meaning.
