Magnificent French Antique 18K gold diamond Chimera brooch
Magnificent is the first word come to mind when we saw this substantial French work 18k gold large chimera brooch, which dated back to the Art Nouveau era.
This is a truly unique “one-of-a-kind” piece & very refined piece of jewelry, and nobody else can have anything like it. The whole piece is crafted with the extreme attention to the details, from the lively feathers on the wings to the little tongue out of his mouth. The gold is worked in different textures in high relief. When looking at it, we’ve the impression that the chimera is jumping out of the brooch!
The chimera holds a diamond in his mouth, as he is the legendary treasure guardian. The diamond has an estimated weight of 0.15 ct and it shows a very good clarity with lots of sparkle. The golden body contrasts with the diamond’s brightness, creating the coveted visual effect. The brooch weights over 16g, providing a substantial presence without being overwhelming. A true rare piece to add into your antique jewelry collection!
Toward the close of the 19th century French jewelers created a golden bestiary of fantastic creatures and mythical animals. Chimera is probably one of those most mysterious creatures we can have in the antique jewelry: The Khimaira (Chimera) was a fire-breathing creature with the body & head of a lion and a serpent for a tail.
