Victorian 18K gold triple diamond crescent moon Pendant
This beautiful 19th-century pendant showcases a poetic design featuring three intersecting crescent moons — a motif rich in symbolism and deeply beloved during the Victorian era.
Each crescent is gracefully pavé-set with a total of 45 glittering diamonds: larger, softly cushion-shaped old mine cuts and delicate rose cuts that shimmer with antique charm. The diamonds are set in silver, to enhance their brilliance, and backed with 18K yellow gold for warmth and structural integrity. The settings are open-backed, allowing light to pass through and enliven the stones’ natural fire. The total estimated weight of the diamonds is approximately 1.7cts.
Softening the brilliance of the diamonds are three luminous white pearls, likely natural, adding a serene glow and elegant balance to the celestial composition. Completing the piece is an 18K white gold bale, probably a later addition/replacement to the piece.
Crescent moons were powerful symbols during the Victorian period, representing femininity, change, intuition, and the eternal cycle of life. A triple crescent design, such as this, could suggest the phases of the moon and the stages of womanhood: a deeply resonant theme in both mystical and romantic Victorian culture. Queen Victoria herself had a fondness for celestial motifs, which helped popularize the use of stars and moons in sentimental and mourning jewelry. The moon, ever-changing and yet constant, was seen as a beautiful metaphor for enduring love and emotional depth.
This pendant offers a glimpse into the romantic ideals and aesthetic brilliance of a bygone era.
