Rare Victorian era 18K gold Malachite Cherub & Dog Vinaigrette Pendant
A rare and sentimental treasure from 19th-century France, this exquisite malachite vinaigrette pendant is a captivating blend of artistry, symbolism, and history. Richly engraved on both sides, the front depicts a tender scene of a bewinged cherub gently embracing a dog—an image steeped in emotional resonance. The dog, symbolizing loyalty, nestles affectionately against the cherub, a timeless emblem of enduring love. Surrounding them are finely engraved rose flowers. Cleverly integrated into the scene are tiny windows, which once allowed delicate perfume to waft from the hidden compartment inside.
The reverse side features an elegant rose garland, reinforcing the themes of devotion and eternal beauty. Both scenes are framed by an ornate floral gold border, harmoniously joining the two sides in a harmonized design. The pendant is fully reversible and can be worn on either side—allowing the wearer to choose the image that speaks to them most.
True to its original purpose, this pendant opens to reveal a small hidden compartment. In the 18th and 19th centuries, such pendants—known as vinaigrettes in French—were used to carry aromatic substances or perfumed sponges. These scented compartments helped revive ladies who felt faint in crowded or stuffy environments.
Delicate, meaningful, and imbued with romantic symbolism, this pendant is a whisper from the past, celebrating love, loyalty, and the tender bonds that never fade.
The chain on the photos is not included into the listing.
