For sale a beautiful and rare French antique medal signed by the famous Medalist M. Jampolsky.

The medal features the young Saint Jean-Baptist looking in front of him. Next to him on the left, two lambs walking under the sunshine; A lamb is the common attribute of Saint John the Baptist. Saint John the Baptist is represented with a lamb to symbolise his recognition of Jesus as the Son of God. When John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan he said 'Behold, the Lamb of God'. The lamb is also the symbol of the innocence in the Bible. On the medal, John the Baptist is holding a cross stitch on his shoulders. On the bottom of the medal is engraved “St Jean”, which means John the Baptist in French.

Born in Kiev, Michel Jampolsky was a student of Daniel Dupuis, Ponscarme and Rasumny. He was a famous maker of French coins and medals, he studied at the School of Decorative Arts in 1894-1895, and he regularly exhibited his medals at the Salons Parisiens between 1898 and 1915.

Measurements and condition

In very good antique condition, the back of the medal is not engraved so it can be personalized. Professional cleaned.
