Rare 18th century Georgian era French cut steel onyx silver drop earrings

For sale a magnificent pair of antique cut steel silver earrings from the 18^th century, the Gregorian era.

Dramatic yet light, these dazzling earrings are decorated with numerous cut steel pyramids. Individually hand faceted and polished, these studs are carefully composed together as clusters. Set on black onyx, they are also full of movement thanks to multiple articulations on their drops. Rich in detail, the earrings provide you a subtle while very chic combination of black and white.

Cut steel can be traced as far back as the 16^th century, although it was only in the mid-18^th century that large quantities were produced in England and France. This shiny grey metal supplied significant glitter effect.

18^th century steel exhibits up to 15 facets on each stud whereas the mass-produced 19^th century variety contains as few as 5 facets. Exam the stud on the earrings closely with the help of a loop, you will be amazed to see how many tiny facets there are on each of them, a prove of their dating.
