Curiously timeless
Antique banded agate bead hair comb pin tiara
For sale a very rare hair comb from the 19th century (the Victorian era), decorated with a line of 9 large banded agate beads. The agate cabochons measure from 13mm to 16mm in diameter. Agate is a fine-grained chalcedony quartz and one of the first gem materials known. Its history goes all the way back to the ancient Egyptians, who first used it for adornment more than 3,000 years ago. Ancient cultures used it in amulets and talismans. They believed that it provided the wearer with a bold heart and pleasant dreams. The body of the hair comb is made in horn.
This refined hair accessory provides us with an exciting new way to wear fine antique jewelry and to create a unique look that no modern pieces can have. We love how functional the hair pin is, with a rich story and history behind at the same time. The body is made in tortoise shell.
The elaborate hairstyles of the 19th and early 20th century were adorned with a variety of jewels which took the shape of the nature. Combs, fashionable at that time, are used when the hair was worn gathered in chignons at the back of the head. Either of traditional design or of a more modern look, they are always beautifully carved, making them rare and unique. Antique combs, or hair pins are very much appreciated by collectors today, or wedding planners who look for special hair ornaments for the future bride to be.
