Beautiful Large Antique Silver Niello Star Brooch

A beautiful Victorian Era Niello Star Brooch in silver (probably from Russia). The brooch’s surface is enameled with enormous little stars: all in excellent condition without any scratch or missing, which is one of the best Niello jewelry we’ve seen since years! The black and white enamel completes each other so while that the whole design is very chic and versatile. It can also be one the rare wonderful jewelry for men. The texture of the surface is very pleasant to touch as it is as soft as a piece of silk.

Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It is always in very elegant pastel black color, creating interesting, discrete while eye-catching contrasting effect with the soft shimmer of silver.
