Georgian era 18K gold double sided black enamel perfume box pendant

€0

For sale a very rare French antique 18k gold perfume box pendant, with different enameled floral motifs on both sides!

Open the pendant, and a world of history unfolds before you. A small compartment reveals a refined gold window, delicately engraved with geometric openwork patterns—a space that once cradled a small sponge dipped in a perfume created from vinegar. This piece is named "Vinaigrette" in French, harkening back to a time when such aromatic concoctions were a fashionable accessory. The pendant is hallmarked with the French ram head hallmark for 18K gold (in use during 1819-1838).

Popular in the 18th century, vinaigrettes were not just fashion statements; they served a practical purpose. These little perfume boxes were used for washing the face and also acted as a first-aid kit, providing aromatic relief during moments of fainting, often caused by the tight corsets worn by women of that time.

While the use of vinaigrettes may have faded by the 19th century, this pendant carries with it the echoes of a bygone era. Today, you can infuse your own personal touch by adding your favorite fragrance or even dried flower petals, making it a sentimental and unique accessory.
