Antique 18k gold citrine Saint Esprit Holy Spirit pendant

Appearing in the 17th century, the Auvergne (a region in France) jewel known as the Holy Spirit reached its golden age in the 19th century. It is a gold pendant set with precious stones that represents a dove with outstretched wings descending to the earth and has three drop-shaped pendants at its end. The holy spirit is worn with a gold chain or a velvet ribbon.

The design of a Saint Esprit varies slightly depending on the different regions in France, with more or less sophisticated mountings. Very often, the pendant is created by foiled back gemstones such as garnet or citrine; the wings of the dove can also be enameled to create more colorful tones. Since the gold and the enamel are very delicate, it is not easy today to find one in very good antique condition.

In front of us a beautiful example of the antique Saint Esprit 18k gold pendant from the French region called “Puy-en-velay”. The cross is made by a refined gold sheet cut into the form, engraved and then carefully enameled. It is created with two citrines and two colored stones in a deep yellow color: the central one in oval cabochon cut and the other three in faceted pear shape; they are foiled back. The wings of the dove are beautifully enameled in a white background with blue dots: the bird is associated with purity, by its whiteness and fidelity. It also evokes love and fertility. The three garnet pendants of the jewel symbolize the tears of Christ. The holy spirit is a jewel expressing the faith that the future husband offers to his bride; or also from mother to daughter. It will follow the life of the person who wears it and evolve with it: elements can be added with each birth of the children.

In overall good antique condition. slight missing on the enamel; small dents on the back of the citrine stones. Slight trace of use on the gold.
