Malachite is an opaque gem with a strong bluish green to green color. It typically shows curved banding (in varying shades of green). It has a long history as a gem: It was found by early civilizations as they emerged from the Stone Age. The Egyptians used malachite for jewelry and other ornamental purposes as early as 4000 Bc. In the Middle Ages (from about 500 to 1500 AD) people in Europe often hung malachite on cradles to assure peaceful sleep for their children and protect them from witchcraft. People wore pieces with eye shaped markings as amulets to ward off the “evil eye.” Using the malachite to create the body of the scarab gives the brooch another historical meaning.

It is also be a wonderful gentlemen brooch to pin on the tie or on the suit jacket.
